“Spartacus: War of the Damned”, The Rise of Crassus in history

Watch Spartacus: War of the Damned Episode 1: Enemies of Rome – After several defeats and having a rebellion of the poor in its land, Rome started to feel the tension. Although they still had their great armies behind but the question is, who will lead the armies? It then comes, one man volunteered to lead an army against the slaves. He is Marcus Licinus Crassus, one of the wealthiest men in Rome and from a very noble family. His an ambitious man and wanted to be recognize not just on the land he was standing but to the widest land and sea a man can see. He took command of an army of 40,000 defeated soldiers and punished them, including reintroducing decimation – the killing of one in 10 soldiers for cowardice in battle. With this army he pursued the slaves to the toe of Italy. Behind him marched Pompey the Great, newly returned from his victory in Spain.

Crassus was able to defeat a 30,000-strong breakaway group of German and Gallic slaves. The rest of the slave army was bottled up on the nearest shore facing Sicily. Plutarch claims that Spartacus tried to do a deal with pirates to transport his horde across the sea but was either betrayed or prevented from doing so by Crassus. The slave army did however break out and tried to march to the port of Brundisium, but was prevented by the landing of another Roman army at the port. Spartacus was now surrounded on three sides by Roman armies and on the fourth by the sea.
